Pieter Bruegel (Mega Square) Details

Pieter Brueghel was the first important member of a family of artists who were active for four generations. Firstly a drawer before becoming a painter later, he painted religious themes, such as Babel Tower, with very bright colours. Influenced by Hieronymus Bosch, he painted large, complex scenes of peasant life and scripture or spiritual allegories, often with crowds of subjects performing a variety of acts, yet his scenes are unified with an informal integrity and often with wit. In his work, he brought a new humanising spirit. Befriending the Humanists, Brueghel composed true philosophical landscapes in the heart of which man accepts passively his fate, caught in the track of time.

Reviews

This book has practically everything there is to know about the Brueghels (mainly Pieter the Elder). There actually isn't a whole lot known about him, especially considering how important of an artist he was & continues to be. But the historical information that is known is well presented here, as well as insightful interpretations of his works. There are lots of full color reproductions of his art, and the quality of the reproductions is very good. Unfortunately it's a very small book & they would have looked so much better at a larger size. That's my main reason for taking 1 star off the overall rating here. But for anyone interested in Pieter Brughel, this book is really a must have & I highly recommend picking it up.
